Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society News
The up-coming production of GMDS is Miracle on 34th Street - The Musical. This is the very first amateur performance of this musical in Ireland! The chorus have started with rehearsing songs for the musical and auditions for lead parts have been taking place. The music is new to many of us and it is a novelty to be working on new songs and getting to know each character.
DORIS WALKER, a very sharp young career-woman and free thinker
SUSAN, her six-year-old daughter
FRED GAILY, a handsome Marine captain, mustering out into civilian life
KRIS KRINGLE, the real McCoy
MARVIN SHELLHAMMER, an aggressive but somewhat bungling junior executive
R. H. MACY, the boss
Miracle on 34th Street was originally a 1947 Christmas Musical film from 20th century fox starring Maureen O'Hara and John Payne. It is perhaps one of O'Hara's best remembered films. Did you know that O'Hara was born in 1920 as Maureen FitzSimons in Ranelagh in Dublin? She trained in drama, music and dance with the Abbey Theatre and the Rathmines Theatre Company from age 6 to 17. Her father insisted she learn practical business skills but she loved singing and theatre and her career in film started first in England with actor Charles Laughton. At the outbreak of World War II her contract was sold to the American film production company RKO. She worked in low budget films until she was rescued by director John Ford and the rest is history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maureen_O'Hara
The show is on in the Mill Theatre from Wed Dec 5th to Sun Dec 9th.
