AEDs on openstreetmap and/or Staying Alive app. (AED = Auto Emergency Defibrillators for heart attack situations)

For First Aid help at events it would be nice to check prior to events where might be the closest AED. 

We are helping out at Orienteering event in Marlay park this weekend (Family Friendly, see below).

One was used at Parkrun in Busky park April 2019. One was used up on Ticknock mountain bike trails a few months ago.

AED Maps, proprietary, closed source, . . 

There are some AED map apps and websites, some international, a couple of Irish, but information is not accessible unless you are qualified responder. Some First Aid training companies provide the apps, not sure do they share AED locations with each other. I have first aid cpr training but can't access the apps and contribute to adding locations of AEDs on these maps or even see the maps. Where you can see information it is incomplete or out of date. Anyway, an open-source, more publically accessible model would seem to be a better solution for recording AED locations.

So anyway, it's a bit of a mess! :-P
Finding out where AED is unless you see it(in real life or by following facebook/twitter/.../local news) is tricky. If you are not local you won't be able to know where AEDs are.
The Staying Alive App seems best currently.




AED locations in OSM


In OSM we can see some AED locations are recorded but there have been a good few new AED devices installed in recent years and many are not on the map. SO . . it would be nice to add them into OSM and use OSM as the database of locations.

How to get started on openstreetmap . . .

Open-Street-Map is an open source map. Anybody in the world can sign up and edit the map like wikipedia. Just like wikipedia you have to be careful and edit the map correctly and follow the correct procedures. There is a community of open-street-map people in Ireland and around the world that help each other to do this.

The best people to edit the map are local people with area knowledge who can visit the location and make sure the map is correct.

At https://www.openstreetmap.org/ click on Sign up or Log in, register as an Open-Street-Map user. Use an existing google account or email. 

At https://www.openstreetmap.org/ you will see an on-screen button to add map notes. That will let you drop a marker on the map with an explanation of what needs to change. But it is even better if you edit the map yourself and fix it. Each change is recorded and can be accepted or amended or removed by openstreetmap moderators.

If we search for "AED" in Openstreetmap . . it brings us to Andorra.
You see, computers are stupid. (I know, I know, when they do become sentient they will hunt me down, but for now they are still stupid). This search is mainly a location name search. Not a thing or POI search (POI == Point Of Interest).

There are different websites and apps that allow different sorts of searches on openstreetmap data. e.g. OSMAnd for Android phones allows searches, map browsing, direction routing. e.g. viewranger uses openstreetmap data with track recording, routing for hiking and cycling. One could develop an app which provided AED search (or more generally emergency tagged items search). 

There is an openstreetmap tool and website called overpass-turbo which allows a general search on OSM objects.
It looks like someone in Bray has added a good few AED locations. 
Maynooth university seems to have lots of AEDs.
You can click on each AED and see the tags added. e.g. this is common

Some are added with just one tag, but this does not make clear if access is private or permissive or free.

Larch Hill - Kilmashogue - Three Rock - Tibradden map with Grid lines and Grid refs.

Map for cub hike Sat. With grid-lines, grid-references and scale. With the aid of OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap(Outside layer), grid-lines awkwardly and labouriously added - gimp grid sized up and offset applied manually. Grid scales added manually. 1 square is 1km square.

OSM's Bigmap is the best way to get a starting image of decent enough size for printing.
And the OpenCycleMap dataset with contours is good for hiking.

Had to use the bigmap perl interface to get image >;-)
Had to sudo apt-get install libgd-dev ^H^H^H^H open ubuntu software manager and install GD perl tools to run it.

Origin is at 53° 30' N, 8° W[1] — a point in Lough Ree, close to the western (Co. Roscommon) shore, whose grid reference is N 000 500.

The chambered cairn at Kilmashogue is known as a wedge tomb.
The cairn has been quite flattened, but you can also see the remnants of the surrounding ditch and bank which would have been a lot deeper when it was first constructed around 2000 B.C. 

The ruined portal tomb at Kilmashogue is located at the National campsite of Scouting Ireland. 
This tomb has collapsed. It is beautifully situated amongst some trees in the dolmen field next to a babbling brook. 
The capstone which has slipped back from the portal stones, is about 3 metres in length. 
Only one of the portal stones is still standing, the other lies under one of the roots of a tree. 
It is still possible to see some of the cairn material scattered around the chamber.

These are good, I have used in the past a good bit:

Now we want to make a challenge for Cub scouts.
Starting at larch hill, set compasses to bearing. Follow it. Distance and waypoints.
Add waypoints, bearings, distance . . . 
Lead stages of hike. 
Find interesting points on route.
Verify location using bearings of landmarks.

Set Compass to bearing of 70 degrees (ENE).
Follow bearing uphill past playground and through cub field for 300m.
  ** counting steps is one way of estimating distance **

Set compass to bearing of 20 degrees (NNE).
Climb over fence on to road. (remember leave no trace!)
Follow road NNE for 500m to Kilmashogue Forest car park.

Set compass to bearing of 160 degrees (SSE).
Follow compass bearing to find some steps and a path, travel 50m up path to Kilmashogue Wedge Tomb.

Follow the path back to car park.

Follow path East for 400m. Can you find the standing stone ?

Continue East for another 300m
Path turns to South East. Set compass to 135 degrees (SW) follow path for 600m
Waypoint 5. Wicklow Way Zig Zag. O 160 241
Follow the wicklow way, which Zigs to East(270 degrees) for about 100m.
And then Zags back to South East(135 degrees) and turns to SSE(160 degrees) for 900m.
Waypoint 6. Wicklow Way bend and steps. O 164 232
The path to East goes towards Three Rock Mountain.
The path to South-West and then South up stone flag steps follows the Wicklow Way.
Follow the Wicklow Way path to South: SSW 200 degrees for 200m and SSE 160 degrees for 900m.
Waypoint 7. Wicklow Way - Dublin Mountain Way cross-path O 166 222
The path to East goes towards Two Rock - Fairy Castle.
The path to West goes towards Tibradden.
Set compass to 70 degrees (ENE). Follow path uphill 600m to Two Rock mountain Fairy Castle.
Waypoint 8. Two Rock mountain Fairy Castle. O 172 223 go down NNE (30 degrees) for 1.1km to crossroads.

REVIEW - hike done ?/4/2016 - update 13/5/2016

We gave out compasses and maps with the waypoint list to cubs in groups of 2s and 3s.
I don't like annoying them with a map extra thing to carry and get in the way and take from enjoyment of hike.
BUT on occasion I think is good. Really needed for learning maps.

We asked cubs to look at Waypoint, directions and compass bearing.
Then set compass and follow directions and bearing.
We checked and showed everyone how to set compass at the start.
All cubs going in one direction, some cubs probably not sure what they were doing but other cubs doing ok.

At each waypoint we checked directions and bearings. We kind of got different cub groups to lead a section of hike. Cubs asked questions like how far along legs we were and were looking ahead at next directions.

We had good visit to Wedge Tomb and look around. Rob gave a talk. I told what I know. We didn't want to waste too much time so headed on.

We didn't find the standing stone. Must have walked past it.
Note to self, put the GPS co-ords in and mark it in google maps or viewfinder and we will have better chance of finding it. ALSO turn on MapMyHike/ViewRanger plot or whatever at START and set it in hike mode.

Nice enough day. Cloudy with breaks. We were warm hiking. Cubs mostly took off very warm stuff clothes and hats early on. We didn't stop for breaks too much. When we got to zig-zag we went straight along East towards Three Rock. Lunch on Three Rock. There was a beaver group up there climbing on the rocks. Chilly enough wind at lunch time. We put back on coats etc. Shammy left us at Three Rock.

We then headed for Fairy Castle. Then on towards Tibradden. Pretty gratifying one cub anyway was still following route exactly on map had our location (this after we had finished the wayoints). Good stuff. Small breaks only e.g. look at the tomb/folly on Tibradden. Some cubs getting a bit tired but all in pretty good form. Then back down road to Larch Hill Entrance. Then up the road (we should take cubs up paths cross country to avoid traffic in Larch Hill).

Data for Cub Scout Hike from Larch Hill to Hellfire and back via Cruagh wood.

Some data for the Larch Hill to Hellfire route . . .

SUMMARY route options:
1. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km (and back 4.5km)  (total 4km on road and 5km on paths)
2. Larch Hill to Hellfire 5.8km (and back 4.5km)
3. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km and back via Cruagh wood and Tibradden 8km
    (total 4km on road - quieter road on way back but watch for cars/bikes)
   The route via Cruagh wood follows a nice forest/river walk in Massey wood up to Cruagh.

1. and 2. breakdown.
Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km (or 5.8km on less steep path up Montpelier)
Road 2.7km, 1km through Massey wood, 0.8km up the hill to Hellfire (or 2.1km wind up the less steep paths)
On the way back simply reverse that route.
Road: 
* Down the Larch Hill road and out main entrance, 
* Continue straight down hill (all the way down Mutton Lane).
  Careful! Narrow roads with traffic!
* Continue straight up to hairpin bend. Total: 1.6km
* Take left at hairpin up Cruagh road.
* Take 2nd right (after 0.5km towards fruit farm) up Cruagh lane.
  Road should be less busy now but watch for traffic/farm.
* Take first right (after 0.3km) up Lamberts lane.
* Near end of lane (after 0.3km) find entrance to Massey woods.
Massey wood:
* Go 1km West(ish) uphill direction on Military Road in Massey wood up to entrance near Hellfire.
* Travel 200m SW up road and turn right into Hellfire car park
  (WATCH out for traffic - the road and car park can be vbery busy)
* EITHER follow the forest tracks up the hill and around back of hill up to peak
* OR turn left immediately after entering car park.
  Follow path directly towards peak.
  When this path crosses forest track you can decide to continue up steeper section or at that point join forest track.

3. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km and back to Larch Hill via Cruagh/Tibradden 8km (total:12.5km)
Go through Massey woods following river walk all way South.
Cross road to Cruagh woods.
Go East through Cruagh wood and cross road to Tibradden wood (at car park entrance).
At Tibradden follow Pine forest track across to Tibradden Lane road, 
Follow road downhill (North) and around to Larch hill main entrance.

Distances:
Down Hellfire to Massey wood river walk 1.5km
Path through in Massey woods follow river path S to Cruagh 1.7km
E across Cruagh woods 1.7km
Back through Tibradden and on road to Larch hill (route we have done a few times previously) 3.1km

Pace/time:
On the last hike up 3 rock I did a rough pace calc and allowed a bit extra for small legs . . . 
We blew that out of the water & had plenty extra time at the top! :-)
The Three Rock hike loop from Balally Scout Den was 11km total. 10am to 2:30pm
The Three rock route we did total distance of 11km: 4.4km up and down and a few km around the top
We did a steady pace at start and didn't slack off despite steep section on Three Rock.

We should allow contingency but Naismiths rule unadjusted seems to be correct for cub hike speed.
Naismith 1hr/5k+1hr/600m 
The 12.5km route works out at 3hours. (no lunch/play time included)

Going direct up steep hill at Hellfire I think could be good as it will keep the interest even though it is a bit difficult.
Provided any old knees can handle it! :)
We should set a steady but slow pace on that section.
We can see on the day how the going is under foot and what time we are making.

I'm familiar with all the paths except the roads to back entrance of Massey wood and the top bit at South of Massey woods to Cruagh so I'm going to scout them out of an evening or on Sat . . .
