Route card for Kippure Hike - komoot app works nicely

You can use App like e.g. komoot.com to help draw route and fill in route card details.
komoot is the latest favourite as you can draw route on phone or at computer.
You can take distances travelled and height gain/loss from app.
App also helps estimate pace - komoot adjusts estimate depending on incline and track type and surface.
I have been doing a few route cards in google sheets.

Add a new tab duplicate of Blank Template when new route is to be done:
Anyone should be able to view that and make a copy for their own use.
Be careful if sharing - you don't leak your hike details to general public until after you do your hikes.
Access restricted but I can share it if you would like to see - just request access.

PROCEDURE: Duplicate route card Blank Template ...

0. fill in title, date, start time 1. Draw route in app and publish. 2. Fill in each waypoint description (following your route in app). 3. fill in Grid ref/lat long and Altiture and Total dist (use app) Optionally use irish.gridreferencefinder.com to fill in ITM grid refs 4. for each segment (view route and select segment can help) fill in Bearings, height climb/fall and incline, length 5. fill in route note e.g. "no path" "follow forest track then hill path" 6. Add up segment lengths and altitude gain/loss and check with total. 7. Fill in estimated time (time with no breaks) 8. add in break/lunch/view point/other stop times 9. Add in Escape notes. 9. Review card, verify distance, height gain/loss, surface and times.

Break complicated legs into 2 or more by adding rows.

Route can be shared first with other Scouters and with Scouts for planning.

Print to .pdf and share for non google sheet users.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r4q_XtAPxNcmxoSoyZgkX_pZ9Tr-MDOV/view?usp=sharing .pdf

(access restricted but I can share no problem it after we have done hike - just request access)

e.g. also save .gpx and .kml files from App for load into other map apps and other uses:

Also, how to embed komoot route view in Google Doc.

Make a local .html file and paste in embed content.

Open that local .html file in your browser (start with link file:///), select the embedded komoot, Copy and then Paste into google doc.

Keeping a Hiking log for Scouts (and non Scouts) (a google doc hike log template)

Copy this Google Doc Hike Log Template to your own Google Doc or start a real Log Book with pen and paper. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KAQCEQ8oGVn9e8eqW35JnDmGn8Umg4Vzv3R9V-Kszv4/edit?usp=sharing
This Template is based on the Scouting Ireland Hillwalking Skills Hillwalking-Logbook.pdf resource.

Keeping a hiking log.

As part of hike review and hiking skills we keep a personal hike log
This is especially important when you lead hikes.
It's good to do the hike log when it is fresh in your mind.

Why keep a hike log?
We keep logs of hikes (and other activities) to help review them and learn from them.
A log is also necessary for the higher Hiking skills levels with Scouting or Mountaineering Ireland.
You might already have a traditional pen and paper log book.
If you don't already have one you should start one.
Using a hardback A4 sized book is a good idea but other sized books work as well.
If you like drawing pictures and maps you can include these and you might prefer to use a sketch pad.
Or you might prefer to keep an electronic log of hikes.

What should go in a hike log ?
See the Scouting Ireland Hiking skills team Hillwalking-Logbook.pdf resource which can be found here:
Mountaineering Ireland have a Digital Log that can be filled in online.
But you need to be a member to use it.

Hike number and Title, Date, Location, Map name/number,
Number in Party, Leader,
Weather,
Coordinating start/end location and lifts/meeting up,
Distance, Time, Height gain and loss.
Route Notes:
Add text of or a link to or picture of route card.
Type of trail (e.g. forest trails, mountain side, bog, wet/dry, rock, on road, country paths)
Name of ways or trails used or national park.
Other Observations:
Your personal rating of the hike
How did that feel? Max effort/moderate/easy/hard/tired/hot/cold/wet/dry ?
 Links to photos/blog post
 Wildlife encountered
Add sketches or pictures or wildlife, trees and plants, mountains and landscape
Sketch Map:
Draw a sketch map of the route on the back

Sketch map or map picture or link to GPS trace map etc.

#LifeHack #CarHack Get a trickle charger.

You can get a cheap and simple trickle charger.
This thing is a simple 12V DC transformer that plugs in with crocodile clips for attaching onto car battery.
It takes a good few hours to charge but plug it in and leave overnight and battery will be fully charged without the need for bringing the car on a big drive.
I had one originally for a motorbike which is long gone but it has rescued us in the car a few times over the years.

A few weeks ago before covid-19 we got all ready for hike, hike clothes on, boots, some food for picnic . . .
We all piled out to the car . . .
Which refused to open! Not a geek out of it!
We used the key to unlock the driver door.
Key into ignition and turned . . completely dead .. no lights .. nothing!
Got a friendly neighbour to help jump start it . . .
With their car running and attached with jump leads to ours the ignition lights went on ... but our car still han not enough oomph to start.

We postponed hike until next day.

Attached trickle charger.
In a few hours it started a bit reluctantly.
Left it attached overnight.
Next day it started grand.

We drove nervously around for the next week or so.
Battery is absolutely fine still (even though our car has been sitting doing nothing all week except for a shopping trip close to home).

HIKE

We did manage to go hiking . . . the next . . WEEKEND!
Over to the loop around Kilbride army camp - Seefingan tomb Seehaun hills,
Confirmed using viewranger, google photos, google maps location timeline . . . yes, the car battery fafooo was Sat March 14, I went for a local MTB three rock on March 15 and the NEXT weekend we went around Kilbride.
.

Got it! March 15th.
Google photos pic of the dashboard lights found.
Kia Carens ignition lights . . battery was dead, recharged over-night with trickle charger.

Here is the Seehaun Seefingan Kilbride circuit on Sat 21 March:
Corvid-19 restrictions just starting, exercise outdoors permitted.
We went to a quiet spot, it proved to be a good plan.
Around this time popular spots(Glendalough, Ticknock Three Rock, Knocksink in Enniskerry) were becoming VERY busy and problematic).
4 of us(me F D M) except Kate came.
We got jammed in tree fall on way up to Croghan.
Found an old fragment of map from a big run to Kippure and beyond.
Saw a dead rabbit near top of Croghan! :-o
Visited the tomb.
We put my bike near Seefingan at end of hike. I cycled back for car at end.

29 Feb visit to Knocksink, Storm Jorge. 3 Rock Scout Survivor we had to cancel! :-(
Fionn and I cycled to Knocksink and back and did a run.
I was interested in discovering ramsons(wild garlic) and lords and ladies growing close together.

Learning some new plants. A little wood anemony starting to appear In Knocksink woods near Ennniskerry. Pretty. Feb 29, wild garlic(edible) and lords and ladies(poison!) leaves emerging from the ground beside each other in places. Wood anemony related to buttercups, poisonous also. Mostly the wild garlic not in same place as the lords and ladies but in a few places they are and when very young can see how bits of the lords n ladies leaves might have been gathered by mistake. Be careful! Not sure what vthe big spear shaped leaves beside the ferns on wet banks are. Our scout Survivor we cancelled due to Storm Jorge orange wind warning for a time Sat afternoon weather was very windy and wet. We met 2 people with rucksacks who were beading to bivvy. Knocksink was very sheltered from the W/SW winds but it might have been an interesting afternoon/evening!!

Hart's Tongue fern and regular fern and spears of wild garlic appearing at base of tree. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asplenium_scolopendrium

More Hart's tongue fern. A hart being a male red deer. Ferns with simple, undivided fronds. As Gaeilge(Irish name): Creamh na muice fia. Creamh = Ramsoms = wild garlic. Muice fia = pig-deer, huh?. So, the ramsoms of the pig-deer. http://www.wildflowersofireland.net/plant_detail.php?id_flower=341&Wildflower=Hart%27s-tongue Latin Asplenium scolopendrium, scolopendrius=centipede, The sori pattern is reminiscent of a centipede's legs. A sorus (pl. sori) is a cluster of sporangia (structures producing and containing spores) in ferns and fungi.

Be careful. Ramsoms, wild garlic. Edible. Lords 'n ladies(i think they are) very poisonous. Also ivy leaves and moss. Lords-and-Ladies / Cuckoo-pint / Arum
Arum maculatum / Cluas chaoin
Family: Araceae https://www.irishwildflowers.ie/pages/4a.html Ramsons / Wild Garlic / Allium ursinum(bear) /Creamh
Family: Lilaceae https://www.irishwildflowers.ie/pages/282a.html

Drive to Bray and walk Bray head on Sunday 23 Feb. With Fionn & the girls.

Larch Hill - Kilmashogue - Three Rock - Tibradden map with Grid lines and Grid refs.

Map for cub hike Sat. With grid-lines, grid-references and scale. With the aid of OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap(Outside layer), grid-lines awkwardly and labouriously added - gimp grid sized up and offset applied manually. Grid scales added manually. 1 square is 1km square.

Larch Hill - Kilmashogue - Three Rock - Tibradden -- Cub Scout Challenge Map with Grid Refs

OSM's Bigmap is the best way to get a starting image of decent enough size for printing.
And the OpenCycleMap dataset with contours is good for hiking.

Had to use the bigmap perl interface to get image >;-)
Had to sudo apt-get install libgd-dev ^H^H^H^H open ubuntu software manager and install GD perl tools to run it.

The chambered cairn at Kilmashogue is known as a wedge tomb.
The cairn has been quite flattened, but you can also see the remnants of the surrounding ditch and bank which would have been a lot deeper when it was first constructed around 2000 B.C.

The ruined portal tomb at Kilmashogue is located at the National campsite of Scouting Ireland.
This tomb has collapsed. It is beautifully situated amongst some trees in the dolmen field next to a babbling brook.
The capstone which has slipped back from the portal stones, is about 3 metres in length.
Only one of the portal stones is still standing, the other lies under one of the roots of a tree.
It is still possible to see some of the cairn material scattered around the chamber.

REVIEW - hike done ?/4/2016 - update 13/5/2016

We gave out compasses and maps with the waypoint list to cubs in groups of 2s and 3s.
I don't like annoying them with a map extra thing to carry and get in the way and take from enjoyment of hike.
BUT on occasion I think is good. Really needed for learning maps.

We asked cubs to look at Waypoint, directions and compass bearing.
Then set compass and follow directions and bearing.
We checked and showed everyone how to set compass at the start.
All cubs going in one direction, some cubs probably not sure what they were doing but other cubs doing ok.

At each waypoint we checked directions and bearings. We kind of got different cub groups to lead a section of hike. Cubs asked questions like how far along legs we were and were looking ahead at next directions.

We had good visit to Wedge Tomb and look around. Rob gave a talk. I told what I know. We didn't want to waste too much time so headed on.

We didn't find the standing stone. Must have walked past it.
Note to self, put the GPS co-ords in and mark it in google maps or viewfinder and we will have better chance of finding it. ALSO turn on MapMyHike/ViewRanger plot or whatever at START and set it in hike mode.

Nice enough day. Cloudy with breaks. We were warm hiking. Cubs mostly took off very warm stuff clothes and hats early on. We didn't stop for breaks too much. When we got to zig-zag we went straight along East towards Three Rock. Lunch on Three Rock. There was a beaver group up there climbing on the rocks. Chilly enough wind at lunch time. We put back on coats etc. Shammy left us at Three Rock.

We then headed for Fairy Castle. Then on towards Tibradden. Pretty gratifying one cub anyway was still following route exactly on map had our location (this after we had finished the wayoints). Good stuff. Small breaks only e.g. look at the tomb/folly on Tibradden. Some cubs getting a bit tired but all in pretty good form. Then back down road to Larch Hill Entrance. Then up the road (we should take cubs up paths cross country to avoid traffic in Larch Hill).

Start of hike up the cub field
Quick break on a log nearing Three Rock

Lunch time top of Three Rock

Path up towards Fairy Castle

Where we came from, view of Kilmashogue from near Fairy Castle top

View of Three Rock masts and Dublin bay in background from Fairy Castle

Data for Cub Scout Hike from Larch Hill to Hellfire and back via Cruagh wood.

Some data for the Larch Hill to Hellfire route . . .

SUMMARY route options:
1. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km (and back 4.5km)  (total 4km on road and 5km on paths)
2. Larch Hill to Hellfire 5.8km (and back 4.5km)
3. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km and back via Cruagh wood and Tibradden 8km
(total 4km on road - quieter road on way back but watch for cars/bikes)
The route via Cruagh wood follows a nice forest/river walk in Massey wood up to Cruagh.

1. and 2. breakdown.
Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km (or 5.8km on less steep path up Montpelier)
Road 2.7km, 1km through Massey wood, 0.8km up the hill to Hellfire (or 2.1km wind up the less steep paths)
On the way back simply reverse that route.
Road:
* Down the Larch Hill road and out main entrance,
* Continue straight down hill (all the way down Mutton Lane).
  Careful! Narrow roads with traffic!
* Continue straight up to hairpin bend. Total: 1.6km
* Take left at hairpin up Cruagh road.
* Take 2nd right (after 0.5km towards fruit farm) up Cruagh lane.
Road should be less busy now but watch for traffic/farm.
* Take first right (after 0.3km) up Lamberts lane.
* Near end of lane (after 0.3km) find entrance to Massey woods.
Massey wood:
* Go 1km West(ish) uphill direction on Military Road in Massey wood up to entrance near Hellfire.
* Travel 200m SW up road and turn right into Hellfire car park
(WATCH out for traffic - the road and car park can be vbery busy)
* EITHER follow the forest tracks up the hill and around back of hill up to peak
* OR turn left immediately after entering car park.
  Follow path directly towards peak.
When this path crosses forest track you can decide to continue up steeper section or at that point join forest track.

3. Larch Hill to Hellfire 4.5km and back to Larch Hill via Cruagh/Tibradden 8km (total:12.5km)
Go through Massey woods following river walk all way South.
Cross road to Cruagh woods.
Go East through Cruagh wood and cross road to Tibradden wood (at car park entrance).
At Tibradden follow Pine forest track across to Tibradden Lane road,
Follow road downhill (North) and around to Larch hill main entrance.

Distances:
Down Hellfire to Massey wood river walk 1.5km
Path through in Massey woods follow river path S to Cruagh 1.7km
E across Cruagh woods 1.7km
Back through Tibradden and on road to Larch hill (route we have done a few times previously) 3.1km

Pace/time:
On the last hike up 3 rock I did a rough pace calc and allowed a bit extra for small legs . . .
We blew that out of the water & had plenty extra time at the top! :-)
The Three Rock hike loop from Balally Scout Den was 11km total. 10am to 2:30pm
The Three rock route we did total distance of 11km: 4.4km up and down and a few km around the top
We did a steady pace at start and didn't slack off despite steep section on Three Rock.

We should allow contingency but Naismiths rule unadjusted seems to be correct for cub hike speed.
Naismith 1hr/5k+1hr/600m
The 12.5km route works out at 3hours. (no lunch/play time included)

Going direct up steep hill at Hellfire I think could be good as it will keep the interest even though it is a bit difficult.
Provided any old knees can handle it! :)
We should set a steady but slow pace on that section.
We can see on the day how the going is under foot and what time we are making.

I'm familiar with all the paths except the roads to back entrance of Massey wood and the top bit at South of Massey woods to Cruagh so I'm going to scout them out of an evening or on Sat . . .

lovely mappy number things follow . . .

James.
