diary/blog(bench repair, cycle to work, cars) and how Writing is like Engineering components that interfaces with brains

This morning mmmmhmm,
I set off the alarm when I open the back door,
I varnish planks for bench repair,
   I hear Fionnuala unmloading dishwasher,
Quiet house, girls went to Cobh yesterday morning to visit
grandparents & cows & cat & dog & farm generally.
Bye to Fionn, quick coffee, cycle to ParcelMotel in Sandyford . . .
Traffic in Sandyford village is slow, there must be a funeral ? cars
parking on pavements on the lower part of the hill away from the
shurch. I squeeze past/through.
At the ParcelMotel bip bip bip bip bip bip - bip - wrong pin ? oops
enter mobile and pin bip * 10 bip * 6 bip kerchunk YAY.
Unwrap. Shoe goo. - NOTE: as of 2023 TEC-7 stuff is much better for repairing boots etc . . .
   Into bag.
 Cycle on to work.
Through Moreen, zoom cycle around roads, onto Drummartin bypass
traffic around but quiet enough,
still it gets backed up as usual so bike catches up and undertakes
cars at each set of traffic lights,
and I stop but then go walking pace through some red lights - very
quiet - no traffic moving through.

vibrant chain of thoughts after shower in work

Writing something is not like engineering and yet . .

With engineering each part has to function and mesh with other parts
and work together.
The function and the mesh can be polished like a diamond or a
Toyota or a new Kia!
And the whole works smoothly and it is a joy to behold.
The function or the mesh might be a bit degraded,
Yet the whole can still work albeit not perfectly.
The function or the mesh might be degraded enough such that the
whole doesn't work any more.
Maybe some repair could be done but it doesn't work.
The working or not working of the whole is obvious with engineering:
   a bench
   a road
   a bridge
   a canal system
   a bike
   a car
   a watch
a computer ? maybe sometimes working is not so obvious!
   software . . . ?

With writing it is not so obvious if the parts do not work together.
Writing has to connect with the mind of the reader,
and mesh with modules of knowledge already there,
     and enhance some modules,
     and perhaps create new modules.
Good writing will be efficient and state the minimum necessary to
engage with the mind of the reader.
Some writing is factual and some writing aims to impart facts and
techniques or methods.
The mind of the reader is given information to load into modules,
the mind of the reader is given instructions,
so writing controls the mind and actions of the reader.
After reading,
if the methods cannot be followed,
it is less obvious if the writing is broken OR if the reader is
missing knowledge or skills or . . . something.
Perhaps the writing would mesh better another reader with a
different set of knowledge.
Perhaps the original reader would need to read other items or
practice skills before being able to understand.
Or perhaps the writing is defective, incorrect in places or
misleading - correct but under certain conditions and complexity has
been left out.

Minimal and TLDR; versus comprehensive.
Need comprehensive yet simple documentation/info exchange, yet people
are too impatient to wait for or read comprehensive docs.
Combine writing with diagrams.
Reference to other documents. Divide up topic.

In school books were my friend.
Learning off by rote names or dates or lists of counties or chemicals
was not really my thing.
Or poems or worse prose or irish quotes. Or french words or verbs!
 Or maths theorems.
Why learn things off if they were already written down ?
I always found that hard and convinced myself it was optional for a
clever chap like me.
 Anyway,
somehow a decent vocabulkary of English words built up in my head.
On occasion a more unusual word would come out in conversation
sounding normal in my head yet catching the ear of others who might
occasionally point out the novelty.
Somehow lists of chemicals and facts about trees and physics and
maths and all sorts built up in my head.
Some cool and simple enough poems like McCavity the Mystery cat,
Ozymandias, some Kavanagh stayed in my head for a while.
Although the exact sequence is very hard to retain.
As an adult learning song lyrics takes work . . and is very hard to
get to a rote state.
First lines of verses will obstinately not pop into my head at the
right time :-7
But with pratice and taking a step back to learn songs at different
levels works . .

With computers and software the engineering definition of "working"
seems to have become more fuzzy.
And as computers or more complexity are added into cars, washing
machines, lightbulbs the fuzzy workingness is becoming ubiquitous.
Our Renault Grande Scenic - great space inside - seats fold down to
make van space.
Worked well for us for years, last couple of years the fundamental
problems were:
    1. air blowers stopped working, air heater stopped working,
IF we had only known KEEP your air intakes (below windscreen
under grille at top of bonnet) free of leaves/gunk !!
    2. cylinder coil went in the end, too much to repair
 Various other issues were:
Parking brake warning and stopped fixed nicely by Welsh parking
brake fixy people and local mechanic.
Periodically a cylinder coil would degrade and need replacement.
  Windows:
need to reprogram if battery went dead,
near the end once a window went down by itself and stayed down,
for a week . . . and then started working again
(I did clean/lubricate but not much),
otherwise fine for us despite stories of funny window behaviour by
other owners.
Sunroof: (need to keep lubricated - on new Kia as well)
Seats (need to keep lubricated, clear rubbish so they fold or click
upright correctly.
Very frequently blew light bulbs (dipped beams, main beam, others) :-P
Keys: my key fob died and I killed it altogether trying to open the
case and solder a fix too hastily.

Battery replaced periodically . . . serviced oil/air filters, oil,
windscreen wash . . . tyres, steering parts

The older fiesta similar major problems:
 1. Heater/air blower:
mostly didn't work so cold and foggy windscreen in the winter
occasionally did work but got stuck on hot so long trip down
country people overheating windows down
 2. rust underneath and coming up sides/doors
repaired a few times to get through NCT
Key twisty roundy needed to get replacement and program it.
Paintwork rusty patches sprayed in very patchy manner.

Engineering software if I look at how some parts of system works . . .
Distributed system - a seemingly simple operation like checking
version - not designed, could be done in various ways. Answer now not
a simple "vx.xx.xx" but might be multiple versions + elements of
config. Complex systems. :-P  Yet not that complex. Bring back the
says of 64k RAM! Maybe :) It comes back to DESIGN. Design and
architecture of software components, how they mesh together. Same for
writing, architecture of what documents are needed, design of chapters
and diagrams, writing, implementation.

The Bench
Strong cast iron with wooden seat and wooden + cast iron back.
The wood was very poor and not treated well and started rotting very
quickly a year or so after buying bench.
I replaced most of the the bench seat planks retaining front most
curved one and rear and wood-stained all but didn't dismantle bench to
paint all surfaces. Lasted a few years with a clean and top up of
woodstain some time.

Now the planks on bench back are rotten (from the unpainted surfaces
in contact with cast iron).
And older unreplaced planks are more rotten so replacing almost all
now with new.

Measured. Bought wood. 2 planks:
 plank #1 W2 x L*2 x H
 plank #2 W x L*2+20cm*2 x H
  Let L = bench width 170mm I think.
Let L2 = shorter plank at front ~168cm.
Let W = 7cm new (original about 65mm) narrower planks on back sides
and on seat.
Let W2 = 9cm new (original about 8cm) two wider planks on back.
Let H = 18mm (or 20mm new planks (or 16mm smaller older planks)).
  For back:
    2 W2 x L x H
    2 short sides 20cm x W x H
  For seat:
    1 W x L x H at back
    1 W x L2 x H at front

Kate cut the planks to size(making a mistake cutting wide plank for
back slightly shorter length for front) but will work around that
using one narrow one wide plank on back. Kate took off one rotten
plank from front of bench. Kate hand drilled holes for front plank and
wood cracked a bit with force of bolt going in. Will varnish and
gorilla glue support the crack.
Tue: Took rotten wood off back. Oiled bolts. Cleaned off bench/parts.
Wed: I finished cutting. Measured and drilled bolt holes.
Sanded/cleaned wood. Applied white spirits and coat of varnish.
Thur morn: applied another coat of varnish to new planks.
TODO: Varnish on old wood on bench (take off all planks and do it properly?).
Another coat of varnish on new wood.
    Assemble.
Burn cool/cute things on backside ?

My Bike(s?):
Pedal needs replacing on my hybrid commuter.
And bell and water bottle holder.
AFter JamboRi took carrier off MTB and put back on my bike and fixed
up mudguard.
Mudguards are held with sisal and old broken bungee :-7 is ok for now.
TODO: Kate brakes, Kate mudguard lost on JamboRi I think
TODO: carrier for MTB >;) and pannier.

Ladder and St. Paddy's day parade, rugby-catch in St. Paddy's park, ... and MyFairLady docs finishing

We brought our ladder to Paddy's day parade in Dublin.

Parked by canal. Bagsed a location near tree and I minded it while Fionn and kids played in park. Ladder leaning on tree proved optimum for getting amount of kids on (as well of course for height) and there were nice branches in tree to hang on to.

After parade played rugby-catch in park. Very appropriate park. St. Patrick's park with St. Patrick's well and St. Patrick's cathedral. Played catch with Daire and Jaliath and Kate and Maeve and another kid. Didn't squish any small passers-by thankfully! It was more or less catch with passing of rugby ball to anyone included.

Day of sleep in and rest for James.
Though *ahem* I've just done a few hours of Intune work.
oops.
Did finish (more or less) of My Fair Lady programme last night. Printer version ended up as 160M in size. Here is a smaller 7.7M version: http://www.dspsrv.com/~jamesc/music/MyFairLady_Prog_019_Smaller.pdf  I've been up a few late nights doing that. Also scenes for figuring out when to change costume and get ready sent to everyone: http://www.dspsrv.com/~jamesc/music/MyFairLady_Scenes.pdf

diary, work Demo, busy weekend; family, drama, cycling, motorbike jobs

Demo day in work Thursday. All working and stable, a half hour in morning of no light getting back to one Transponder but that's fixed quickly. Demo runs very easily. Back to work automating tests Thur + Fri. Fix labview + socket things, move desk Fri and fix misc test things.

Fri morning Maeve gets up a bit earlier. She can't rouse anyone so crys (because she wants to get up in time to get the bus). Bus rescheduled for next week. We're all ready 8:10. Cycling is mooted for all, but in the end I cycle and kids + Fionn take car.
Whew! I've not cycled to work in a month or more. Hard work.
Hungry Fri evening.

Sat I do motorbike jobs and miscellaneous other things. For motorbike I take off seat (stuck! now oiled) and raise back box and fix left indicator (back box pressed down on it, fixed with bamboo + duct tape). finished desoldering old switch, disconnect messy cables and put switch back on, put in new battery. It's fit to go to garage and not completely confuse a proper bike mechanic now. When warm she's revving high. Carburettor needs cleaning? Also a small hole in exhaust and service should be due.
Motorbike job starts in morning and goes on piecemeal all day interrupted by other things, food, collecting kids. Luckily no rain, cover bike and tools when job left from showers though.

Builder Dermot calls morning. Dominic's brother. Gutter problems pointed out.

With motorbike battery put an old flying insect of  Daire's on charge. Flew it a bit with Daire just before light faded.

Collected Kate from gym by bike + trailgator. I thought Kate would be tired but no, loads of energy. I could really feel her pedalling from behind.

In afternoon I go down to Dundrum, look at white shirts - see one in M&S 35 euros, Hmm. no sure. Also the park bike, tramp through half shopping centre and tramp back is ... interesting in a way but ... not a place I like to be. Out and down to Noel Reid's who are back in old Dundrum Shopping Centre. (because now it's not going to be redeveloped so they were allowed to open up again). Measured for suits for My Fair Lady and buy white shirt there. 45 euros. But I couldn't bring myself to park and trail through the Dundrum shopping centre again. Get newspaper on way home.

Evening TV (British family on holiday France, seems normal for a long while though with ominous music. ... scary things do happen!). Some perl for manipulating rubik's cube while doing this (and printing in curses colours).

Sunday up and breakfasted, cappuchinos and hot chocolates for us again, last of milk used. Dominic calls fix radiator leak by tightening valve (valve needs replacing). Water off, fiddling in attic. Gutter pipes and fiddling out back. Wooden floor buckling problem discussions.

We all go see the new Chipmunk movie in Dundrum. That's two movies in a real cinema in about 3 weeks. A phenomenal record for us! It's quite  a good and funny one. Maeve really is absorbed and rocks along with the songs.

After this we need quick food. Carvery in Dundrum shopping centre food mall was introduced to me before by theatre crowd. We head there and get good and fast food. Fionn and Kate kids portions of pasta + fish and pasta + chicken. Daire and James and Maeve burger and Lamb and chicken(kids portion) respectively.

I have about 2 main meals each day with lots of food in between. Definately well fed and snacked this weekend!

Grab car from car park, to scout den to drop me for rehersal. We go from start to servants song (and a bit more, probably almost all act 1. We repeat Ascot Gavotte a few times. Both for performace tonight and for show. I'm a butler already for Poor Prof Higgins song but also get a line and bring in Doolittle. Might have to chop off my long hair to be a butler!

Fionn and kids visit Eoghan and Mary and family and collect black shoes and a bow tie for me. Then to GAA for presentations. I walk over to there then to home. Food then I cycle down to Mill. Rehearse Ascot a bit after 7. Then waiting and perform a bit before 9. Whew! Fun. Cycle back up home. Chat and tea, Daire and Fionn. Caoime puts up some photos of the Ascot Gavotte costumes - fellas white shirt and black bow tie with black trousers. Girls dresses and hats all shades of black and white.

My neck is quite sore/stiff. Partly all body sore after cycle Friday.
Oh! That reminds me. I got rear ended at end of Sandyford in the morning on way to work. Me on pedal bike. Rearended by black SUV. I passed a black suv pulling out before getting to traffic lights at bottom end of sandyford village. Way back from lights  they went orange and then red so I pulled up in orange box. Stopped and put foot down and stood. Then whang! Rear tyre of bike bounces forwards. Jeezus! The black SUV has  driven all the way into the orange box to the front and hit me. I'm surprised! Surprised I'm still standing (and holding bike handlebars with left hand). And looks like me and bike are okay. Looks like plastic of front bumper of SUV hit rubber of my back tyre. I'd say she just barely caught me a glance. I act indignant and lady comes out to say sorry. I'm fine and bike seems fine, she says she turned round behind to look at the kids. Anyway. I run bike across road at end of green light. Can feel shaky then - adrenaline in system.

Later in evening I feel I have a bruise alright - saddle hit my arse. Right cheek.

I have about 2 main meals each day with lots of food in between. Definately well fed and snacked this weekend!

That's it. ach jaysus 12:54 am! Past bedtime. Silly blog/diary compulsion!

diary: My Fair Lady rehersals, work, toy fun, Martin party, papier maché planets, visit Clogherhead

Rehersals for My Fair Lady this week. Printed lyrics which were handy.
Wed dancing. Out in the hall so there is some more space. Ascot Gavotte is set. Walk on in couples behind, groups of ladies all with parasols in front. Also "I'm getting married" wild dance. Thur sing Little bit of Luck harmony, measuring, dancing "I'm getting married" then sing together and run the Ascot Gavotte of which I have no clue of the harmony. I put some of the bass line into rosegarden but it's proving very fiddly and music notation seems to get a little out of sync ... an extra ghost eight inserting in somewhere!?

In work finally by friday have ALL test scripts written. Weekend and Mon and Tue nightly run and test system get worse and worse with fixes and workarounds on the system and also in scripts. Logon from home in eve and check nightly, fix whatever broke it as best as can, also fix up scripts, examine logs, Kick off nightly and monitor. Thur nightly run goes well. 20 pass, 22 fail. Friday we've got things well in hand waiting to integrate in labview tests though which we do get to at 17:30.

At home school on this week, except in-service day Friday. Wed I leg it home - dancing finished 21:00 on the dot and I leg it home in car so Fionn can go to soccer.

Sat morn we have coffee and girls and I play with my christmas presents from Kate. Balloon powered helicopter and parachuting cap banger. Bit of make & do putting them together and getting balloon-copter to fly. Kate has gymnastics, Roshi brings Maeve to library, I get print cartridge and no rabbit food in woodies, Fionn other shops and meets another gymnastics Mom and kid for coffee, Daire visiting friends.

I cycle into Rathmines, St Louis school for Coram Boy rehersal. Two men with shovel and two guards/executioners. Loads of cast - teens and some kids. We stay quiet for good while and scenes set - fin 19:0x and leg it home. Shower. Some food. Martin's party. Carry tree fern over. Yum hummus, bruschetta, red wine, curry, salads. Meet Yatzek who I've often saluted as he cycles past. Other people. Douglas still into magnets, water treatment, blood treatment, fuel treatment - using divining/energy fields/lines. Tai chi and transferring weight from leg to leg techniques could be handy for dancing. I sing a couple of songs but find alcohol(/group?) causes problems with words - even kicking off very familiar ones to me. Spancil hill. Cad é sin don té sin. Fionn and I do Dúlaman later - that would be a good party one.

Sunday Daire has soccer at 10. We get up 9:45 and Fionn brings D. Kate and I work on her planets project. She papiér machés a balloon and I do an origami box then just scrunched balls (which are more spherical). We might cover them in plaster of paris when done to make surface and maybe add atmosphere somehow. Flour + ground coffee simulate a planetary surface. Bombarded with some pebbles and breadcrumbs.

We go to Cloughjordan and meet Orla and Charlie Bird on the beach. Charlie is really nice. Very quiet but really interested in other dogs. Strong enough too. Very thin. I think he's very mastif like? He's part boxer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Mastiff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_dog. Lovely beach for a walk. We like rocks. Kate collects shells and some small (and dead) starfish.
Visit house and get tea and tour and play with piano and mandolin.

Home -1 celcius ish and a bit but not very foggy.

snow cycling commute Dublin. 5 trips and 2 slips

I've been cycling since Tue. 5 trips and 2 slips. Oops. No damage to self or bike.
Ken’s tip very true: When the tyres go quiet watch out it's slippy you’re going top fall.
This morning: don't try cycling on those ridges of slush in the cycle lane that looks like slush but is actually frozen!

I'm commuting from Sandyford to Park West, about 15km.

It has snowed a bit in Dublin and temperatures are below 0 for a week so far which we’re not used to in Ireland.
Roads cleared less actively than last year I think.
Snow during day Wed meant loads of cars left early to get home, got stuck in traffic and also the gritters/salters couldn’t treat the roads as they were stuck in traffic.
We need snow plows – cheap snow plows on cars, trucks would probably be good.

Monday: Our housing estate has packed snow on paths and roads.
Roads a little bit better as they were gritted and driven on.
Our footpath was a bit clear as we swept it.
Motorbiked. Motorbike battery charger had fallen off. Bike wouldn’t start so I jumped it with the car.
Bigger roads mostly clear, motorway clear but could see nasty sheen, bigger roads clear (some isolated bad patches) then Park West industrial estate roads bad.
 Cars leaving from early afternoon.
But slippy ice on small incline made them stuck for hours.
When I left 18:00ish that queue was just clearing.
Park west security people directing cars up the in-lane (which was clear from cars driving on it in morning).
Actually Mororbike would not start. The Bus jump started me! THANKS Bus driver!

Tue: Cycled to and from work.
Main roads pretty clear. Avoid nasty ice and stuff in cycle lane but could use half cycle lane mostly when it existed.
Snow and ice on off-road cycle lanes so didn’t go near them.
On footpath a couple of times when passing queues of traffic.
Going home was pretty okay – things had thawed a bit – some places better but others worse.

T-shirt only under coat so not overheated.
Buff for ears. Light ski gloves. Cat boots working quite nicely.

Wed:

Bit more of an adventure today. Snow hadn't cleared out much but roads were clear ish and salting of main roads made cycling okay in morning.

Snow during day caused fun. Cars started trying to go home from morning but small incline on road slippy, one car stuck which caused everyobne to be stuck. People should use bumpers and push :) Also further over when going to lunch and from reports of everyone checking up on each other all park west roads jammed solid. People left 2 or 3 and gave up after an hour or more.

I slipped near Rathfarnham church going home . Slippy slippy ice. Bike and I slid along a bit. No damage, front mudguard moved a bit. Better on footpath. That was the worst set of ice I had seen. Park west road and hill in iopposite dir to me and also ice around roads by Rathfarnham shopping centre was quite bad (and worse for cars as the ice was on hills). On the icy hills some cars were doing a very bad job. Revving alot and wheels slipping and really polishing up the ice.

Phew! Starved. Pasta + red cabbage (braised, lots) + lamb burger +other scraps.
Earlier for lunch ham + cheese + coleslaw baguette, 1 apple, 2 bananas, loads of coffee.
Usual porredge + rasins + museli + milk for breakfast.

The rabbits seem to be having lots of fun.
They don't rush in when door is opened (as they were doing a bit when it was aboput 0 degrees).
They run and jump in the snow.
And still seem to sit just about anywhere.
Replacing water at least 2wice a day for them.

Thur:
Our estate roads still covered. More main roads have plenty of snow - but it is broken a bit from salt/grit and light traffic. I cycle where there is grip. No cycle paths free this morning.

I slipped this morn near Sandyford. Nipped into frozen ridge of slush on bike lane. It looks just like soft unfrozen slush. Crunch. Frozen slush absorbs impact okay. This morning on all roads there was plenty of snow. Also with ice in ridges underneath and softer snow above. Different layering of snow on duifferent roads. Very few places with even a bit of road clear to the road surface. Cycling on flat surfaces best. Road mostly.

Cycle on footpath a few times. Packed snow but with crunch on top, grip is fine.
Passed Brian Murphy walking in from Rathfarnham.

Some tips and techniques:

I agree with Nutty cyclist, don't soften your bike tyres! And use Mountainbike tyres.
I have a mountainbike tyre on back and normal road tyre on front hybrid bike.

http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=1659
incidentally I need to do this sometime:

checking Tonight, IR map, snow radar.
More snow predicted tonight (thur 7/1/2010) and looks like that will be on top of what is not shifting from roads now. Hmmmm.

Gordon’s weather station:
Newbridge, Co Kildare.  Down to -6 to -8 from 00:00 to 10:00 Thur 7/1/2010. Up to -3 now!

diary / family news

Email from John from Oz. They're doing lots of trips and touristy things with Mum and Noreen. I replied with out news.

I didn't tell him I got a cold :( I've an annoying cough. MBleh! :(
Was out with exCommProve people Friday.
Cycled in and out of town.
Buenos Aires Grill. Mmmm Empanadas de carne. Mmmm Guarnacion de something ribe eye :). Pavlova was just merangue, hmmm not mmmm. Off to the very loud globe after that.

On Sat I mostly changed brakepads on motorbike. Lots of housework. Some kids clothes had tricky stains on them. Some gardening and picking up rubbish on green on Sunday. Fionn brought Daire to soccer and also brought girls and Jaliah with scooters +roller blades. I cooked risotto.

Fionn was at residents meeting this evening.
The digging up of the green is nearly over now.
Big slice still fenced off but it's growing newly sown grass now.
(rising water main from Stillorgan resivoir to higher ones for feeding all the loads of new construction in Sandyford area)
Also being installed is some playground equipment.
Hopefully it survives being constructed - older kids break in and are all over it the whole time.
It seems to be surviving alright anyway.
The little digger building the playground had windows broken - someone threw a firework in apparently. Hmm.
Lots fireworks already for a few weeks now.

We're off to Cobh next weekend to visit Dad Sat then Limerick Sunday afternoon after Sunday dinner,
Daire's off with scouts camp in Larch hill for Halloween. That's the weekend following.
Kids are good.
Daire's busy - Soccer is new, tough as he's playing under 12s to be in same squad as a friend.
He's over on the MUGA loads with his friends.
Kate's really good at the gymnastics. She did some for show and tell in school and she teaches us some at home too :)
Kate's doing the recorder too ... starting to string some notes together with about the right sound and timing on occasion.
Maeve does the gymnastics too now. She started doing it on the side whenever dropping or collecting Kate.
The first week she was cross because she said they all said she was the smallest.
We had to leave her down gently and explain she was the smallest (by at least a half a head).
The others were all lifting her up too.
She's accepted/forgotten it now "someone has to be the smallest".
She's great in school, tells us lots about it.
Her best friend is a Lily too.

Some fun taking down election posters & kids school Play

Kids were in school play last 4 days.
Very good actually combination of variety Irish dancing, singing and music by kids and teachers mixed in with two stories.
Snow White and Prince Hugh
Kate on Mon (F&M saw her) + Tue (F&M&I saw her and Daire).
Daire was Prince Hugh who was a bit too popular with the girls for comfort!
Daire was Prince Hugh on Tue and today (Thur), on Wed Daire was in Larch hill with scouts.
(Maeve and I dropped Daire, Cian and Conor over to scouts.
We left Kate with Moya to get lift to play.
Maeve & I watched play and collected Kate.)
Kate was very funny and nice as a dwarf.
She marched around very confidently.
She was very expressive - especially when they saw snow white had collapsed!
She stared very concerndly at snow white at the end.

Had great fun with Daire collecting some more election posters.
He was really good at spotting them from car and great help carrying snippers and posters and ties.
He was still dressed in sandals and pants with rope lashing on them for costume and still with moustache of Prince Hugh.
He got hit on the arms with one poster on the way down. :(
I got some myself on way back from dropping him down to do school play.
Met Catherine and Kevin also collecting posters.
Kevin has a magic long snippy rope stick.
It almost flies like a broomstick!
We have 10 of Elizabeth's, 4 of Adrianne's and 1 each of Terence's and Deirdre's.

We met a friendly drunken person drinking through a plastic bag full of cans at the Goat.
He offered to help but we had our ladder.
He was asking how much might the fine be if they were left up and if you could make money putting the posters up or down.
He scooted off real fast, hopefully not to get a ladder!!

Fionn's really busy with Residents stuff.
Delivering flyers about AGM, collecting subs, getting photos ready, making presentation for AGM, arranging things with roads/greens/sports&social, stuff needs to go up on web and be printed. http://lhra.info

I'm suffering form VERRRY annoying cough.
It was a teeny possible allergic sniffle coming back from camping. :(
The heat seemed to initiate it.

Leopardstown Heights Clean up Day 2009

This weekend: Daire at scout camp.
He heads off Friday after swimming.
I'm in work until 6 then go visit Bill and have a cup of tea.
And bring him the 1 egg left (the mutant one we didn't eat) and 2 of our chicken's eggs.
Fionn heads off consulting in garden design :) and I get girls to bed really really late :-o.
Later I go and hang up clean up day posters.

Clean up day on Green Sat.
Maeve to birthday party in Total Fitness in morning.
Lashing rain and quite wet all morning.
Preparing for clean-up day and house tidying and cleaning.
Weather clears and lovely Sun before clean-up start.
Fionn goes to get Maeve home.

I see hmm, better not to name minor miscreants 3 kids tear down a cleanup day poster and drop it on ground.
So I scoot across and arrive at their front door as they do.
Grrr. :-P dutiful miffedness ensues.
Societal responsibility of reporting minor miscreantness finished race back to Kate who was eating.
Kate fed and dressed.
Fionn back home, I bring Kate to gymnastics. With Maeve.
When we get back Gazebo is up and clean-up day is officially started.
Myself and Maeve change clothes, then bring bucket and brushes and gloves across (and Maeve brings bike).
Pushing Maeve over carrying loads of stuff she tumbles off bike :(.
We go and collect rubbish bags and go to sweep broken glass from around MUGA.
Sweep sweep sweep sweep sweep.
Maeve cycles a little but then parks bike and picks up rubbish.
Maeve fantastic at scooping up piles of rubbish and loading into bucket.
She keeps at it the whole time I'm there.
Lots of other kids come and chat and help.
The small kids do loads of work.
The bigger kids more play football on MUGA and eat the hotdogs + sweets.

At 6 we're finished fun day, stuff brought in.
Kate and friend feed chickens.
And they help me take down 2 posters (they cycle up).

We have to leg it, Sandyford first for a gift then to Roshi's for dinner.
Visit garden, meet a cat.
Kids eat first after a bit of a play,
Then they go out in the garden and play for ages.
We eat.
Yum yellow rice that was roasted first which looks like cous-cous and pork curry and chickpeas.
Kids come back in and watch tv or something.

Girls walk/jump/dance and massage my back.
Kate does a yoga class for myself and Maeve.

why blog? And disclaimers and disclaiming.

I think I blog (and facebook and keep web pages, photos online, participate in mailing lists):
1. to keep a diary for myself and maybe family/friends/other evolved lifeforms or aliens visiting earth a billion years in future.
2. to post useful info (partly for myself) but also where it would be useful to others
3. keep contact and make contacts with friends/colleagues

No 1. definately works, I look back on stuff I have for 1998/1999 and I can remember tons.
But generally I don't have a good memory before then.
Though I can when prompted remember certain things very well.

No 2./3. works also, sometimes I get feedback from friendly/grateful and sometimes anonymous people :)

I think about these things on occasion "Why Blog?".
This blog entry from Ciáran of FSF is good and serendipitous with my thinking at this moment:
'I always tell people to blog what they’re working on. "If it’s worth doing, it’s worth blogging!"'
That on philosophy of blogging and blogging tips here: http://blogs.fsfe.org/ciaran/?m=200812 in Ciarán’s free software notes

Disclaiming

I always have had a self-deprecating disclaimer somewhere on the front page of my (very badly tended and organized) web pages.
In fact in University for a time in my VAX logout script I had also included a voluminous disclaimer.
Partially because disclaimers(especially in software licences/copy(right|left)s) are a bit of an in-joke for me and presumably other software people.

Here now on my (very badly tended and organised) web pages the intro/disclaimer is like this:

"Content in these pages is my diary, links to my more current blog and collected content on things that are of interest to me. These pages are very much old-style web pages. i.e. a bit of a mess of waffle. Old and unmaintained stuff. Experiments. Sorry. Google will hopefully help people pick out nuggets of information from all the guff.

I'm trying to dump all the contents of my brain onto these (and other) internet pages but I find the baud rate on my nerual->finger->keyboard->internet connection is terrible and my brain capacity is so huge (of course) that it's going slowly. Maybe I could summarise a few things that might be half interesting/useful to people and leave it at that? "

I don't see you laughing.

:-E

Come on! Laugh.

:-P''

Okay. It's waffle in itself.
But the world is a very very complicated place.
I have realised you can only describe a teeny tiny small part of something in any diary/blog post or longer article.
And I'm trying to lower/prepare/set customer/reader expectations at an acceptable level.
Any post is not complete unless you take into account the whole system.
But unless you make and abstract model of the problem and assume lots and summarize you can't be useful.

Maybe. I just think about stuff too much and should just try and DO stuff more.

DO including blogging of course.
Which is itself a form of inaction because whren you're writing a blog/diary entry/article you're not DOing stuff ... properly.
ER last night a buddhist body relocation expert: "If you choose not to act then inaction in itself is a form of action".
