Fitbit charge2 battery life problem ? Solution maybe replace battery.

TLDR; It seems like Fitbit batteries last maybe a year or 2 or 4 before "going bad".

Makes sense, same for any rechargable battery for mobile phones, laptops, . . . telsas, . . .

If we can buy a replacement battery we will try and replace it and hopefully recover the device.

Fitbit don't offer to repair but offer discount on upgrade to new device.

Fionn's fitbit languishing in the uncharged unused pile at the moment.

Report is last few times it was used that the charge just about lasted maybe a day.

Device worked grand maybe for 4 years.

What's the problem?

Software update ? Change in config ? Causing more battery use.

Can see some evidence (on the internet) that this could be a problem.

Not charging properly ?

Myeh loads of info. Official company line.

Charge not lasting long ? Old battery?

Thinking that this is most likely.

Fitbit forum discussion indicate lots of users with problem.

Fitbit company policy seems to be offer discount on purchasing a newer Fitbit device instead of repair.

SOLUTION: Buy a battery and replace it ourselves. We are electronic engineers with a little experience torxing, disassembling mobile phones, laptops, computers, etc and sometimes successfuly replacing parts, fixing screens, replacing batteries etc . . . so we might be able to do it.

Note: The official line is "There is no battery replacment"

Buying a battery and replacing it is a bit tricky requiring plastic/electronics parts gentle disassembly and delicate un-solder, solder on new battery. WARNING: this will definitely void your warranty. It could cause wailing and gnashing of teeth, bruised/cut/burnt fingers/thumbs, dead fitbits, fire. I might be possible if you have some electronics soldering and disassembly/reassembly repair experience. This battery might work: 80mAh LSSP411415 Replace Battery For Fitbit Charge 2, or less mAh(not as good): LSSP411415 Battery for Fitbit Charge 2 Smart Watch SmartWatch 60mAh Li-Po Li Polymer Voltage:3.7V Not original parts obviously so size(physical dimensions and power) as well as quality could be an issue, BUT they might work. Good project to take on.

VERY GOOD HOW TO video on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYwEM7W19dg

4 mins but fast forward in the soldering part of the video, I would guess this task would take me an hour (not includign time to browse web, find all the infos, find battery, purchase). And I already have torx screwqdrivers, philips, tools, soldering iron, etc etc.

No detail on battery and instead of soldering a technique called smoldering is used >;-) "Smoldering is up next. It can be hard to smolder the circuit board while you’re holding it, so we recommend that you tape it down while you’re working on it."

To Kill A Mockingbird censorship . . . Conrad, Casement, . . Taylor Swift lockdown album out

I read To Kill A Mockingbird for first time a few years ago and found it was really good. The good guys (father and Scout) after all are defending a wrongly accused black man and Scout sticks out as she doesn't buy into the racism.

Not sure if I would have liked it in school but I think it's a great one for secondary school. Some of my friends did it in school. I can see how it would be tough and add to the hassle kids of colour would get in school alright though. Some kids and teens are amazingly stupid/ignorant/? But I think introduce it early is actually good but you have to generate debate in class and openly challenge the stupid/ignorant . . the odd time with youth we have debates that get interesting - some of the boys especially seem to have shocking attitudes

I did Conrad - Typhoon in school. Drunken captain. Bockety ship. South seas. Typhoon. Another of his books is the Nigger of the Narcissus. Like, WTF! Later discovering Conrad and that gay Irish Congo lad . . whats his name ? Roger Casement (successful google of "gay Irish Congo lad" there) met in Congo and shared sentiments of anti-racism and anti-slavery.

Please picture me in the weeds
Before I learned civility
I used to scream ferociously
Any time I wanted

I, I

[Chorus]
Sweet tea in the summer
Cross my heart, won’t tell no other
And though I can't recall your face
I still got love for you

Pack your dolls and a sweater
We'll move to India forever

Passed down like folk songs
Our love lasts so long

AEDs on openstreetmap and/or Staying Alive app. (AED = Auto Emergency Defibrillators for heart attack situations)

For First Aid help at events it would be nice to check prior to events where might be the closest AED.

We are helping out at Orienteering event in Marlay park this weekend (Family Friendly, see below).

One was used at Parkrun in Busky park April 2019. One was used up on Ticknock mountain bike trails a few months ago.

AED Maps, proprietary, closed source, . .

There are some AED map apps and websites, some international, a couple of Irish, but information is not accessible unless you are qualified responder. Some First Aid training companies provide the apps, not sure do they share AED locations with each other. I have first aid cpr training but can't access the apps and contribute to adding locations of AEDs on these maps or even see the maps. Where you can see information it is incomplete or out of date. Anyway, an open-source, more publically accessible model would seem to be a better solution for recording AED locations.

Canada PulsePoint App

AED search in google maps shows a few but not many

Ahhhh, finally!

APP called Staying Alive  https://www.stayingalive.org/

AEDMAP France http://aedmap.org/ in partnership with . . .
You can optionally register as a citizen/other First Aid Responder.
You can edit the map and add AED locations.
And report problems with AED locations.

So anyway, it's a bit of a mess! :-P
Finding out where AED is unless you see it(in real life or by following facebook/twitter/.../local news) is tricky. If you are not local you won't be able to know where AEDs are.
The Staying Alive App seems best currently.

AED locations in OSM

In OSM we can see some AED locations are recorded but there have been a good few new AED devices installed in recent years and many are not on the map. SO . . it would be nice to add them into OSM and use OSM as the database of locations.

ISO 7010 E010.svg
TOOLS:
there are 28000 in the world (in the map)
we have 208 in Ireland  (in the map)

Discussion . . .

https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/41537/why-aed-defibrillators-are-not-displayed-on-maps?

"It would be useful to show AED locations as in preparation for an event as First Aider where I am not immediately local I wish to look up where AEDs are located and then visit to check that there is one there. There are more AEDs installed here in Ireland in recent years but many of them are internal in buildings due to protection from vandalism. Even with talking to local people it is very difficult to find AED locations."

https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=58770

Adding AED locations would be a good project for . . Scouts ?

How to get started on openstreetmap . . .

Open-Street-Map is an open source map. Anybody in the world can sign up and edit the map like wikipedia. Just like wikipedia you have to be careful and edit the map correctly and follow the correct procedures. There is a community of open-street-map people in Ireland and around the world that help each other to do this.

The best people to edit the map are local people with area knowledge who can visit the location and make sure the map is correct.

At https://www.openstreetmap.org/ click on Sign up or Log in, register as an Open-Street-Map user. Use an existing google account or email.

At https://www.openstreetmap.org/ you will see an on-screen button to add map notes. That will let you drop a marker on the map with an explanation of what needs to change. But it is even better if you edit the map yourself and fix it. Each change is recorded and can be accepted or amended or removed by openstreetmap moderators.

Some tutorials here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBjVzMkiYE0RVIbOoqezJHg/videos

If we search for "AED" in Openstreetmap . . it brings us to Andorra.
You see, computers are stupid. (I know, I know, when they do become sentient they will hunt me down, but for now they are still stupid). This search is mainly a location name search. Not a thing or POI search (POI == Point Of Interest).

There are different websites and apps that allow different sorts of searches on openstreetmap data. e.g. OSMAnd for Android phones allows searches, map browsing, direction routing. e.g. viewranger uses openstreetmap data with track recording, routing for hiking and cycling. One could develop an app which provided AED search (or more generally emergency tagged items search).

There is an openstreetmap tool and website called overpass-turbo which allows a general search on OSM objects.
It looks like someone in Bray has added a good few AED locations.
Maynooth university seems to have lots of AEDs.
You can click on each AED and see the tags added. e.g. this is common

  • access=yes
  • emergency=defibrillator
  • name=Defibrillator

Some are added with just one tag, but this does not make clear if access is private or permissive or free.

  • emergency=defibrillator

e.g. of other tags used . . .

defibrillator:location=wall mounted next to the entrance of Tesco
  • defibrillator:location=located on external wall before lighthouse at the end of the east pier
  • defibrillator:location=Fixed to the farmyard wall beside graveyard entrance. Harris's farm wall.
  • defibrillator:location=Located on the wall outside the door of Enfield Credit Union. The machine is enclosed in a secure box and there is a key code provided for access.
  • defibrillator:location=Fixed to the trellis fencing outside of Furey's Pub on the greenway path of the Royal Canal. The Defibrillator unit is fixed to the fencing and accessible 24/7
  • defibrillator:location=on the wall of Cadamstown National School gate entrance
  • emergency=defibrillator
  • opening_hours=24/7
  • indoor=no
  • indoor=yes
  • wheelchair=yes

e.g. access=permissive tag should probably be used here and phone numbers for Gardai

emergency=defibrillator
  • indoor=no
  • location=outdoor
  • note=Phone Mallow Gardai (+3532221105) for access code.
  • opening_hours=24/7
  • operator=Mallow Search & Rescue
  • phone=+3532221105;+353876353850;+353862316091

e.g. access=permissive tag should probably be used here
defibrillator:location=At the side of the Church as you enter the pedestrian gate. The unit is inside a green metal box with key pad. You must call 999 and specify your location. The emergency services operator will then give you the code.

e.g. sometimes unnecessary tags are used (one from Maynooth)

access=no
  • bicycle=no
  • description=Lifepak 1000
  • emergency=defibrillator
  • foot=yes
  • horse=no
  • indoor=yes
  • motor_vehicle=no
  • name=Stoyte House Defibrillator

e.g. sometimes note is used, perhaps defibrillator:location should be used.
note=beside staircase to beergarden
